Two waring armies, have been at each other throats for a few decades. In their endless struggle expanding and demolishing civilization after civilization, a unit from both armies, finally seeing through the useless blood shed, have turned against their own sides. Dodging both sides the two units find each other in a stand off. Through an unexpected event (explosion!) both units are entombed and pitted against each other (11 soldiers total) Initially wary of each others intentions they feud in the crypts. After a few days of fighting they understand that the are on the same side In the sewers they devise a plan to over throw both leaders. They spend years splitting through both armies working their way to the top, facing situations that threatens their goals and pit each other once again on separate sides. After they have taken out the leader of one 'nation' they assume control of the army to take out the remaining leader.

War starts simply for dominance over the other. We learn through the story that both leaders are brother and sister (twins) so it is then established as a gruesome sibling rivalry. This war is in an alternate existing that branches off at 1953 during the Cold War.
